Under the typical high-latitude conditions of temperature, productivity and settlement of chlorophyll and phaeophytin to the sediment, many benthic organisms in the Antarctic show strong seasonal variation. Although meiofauna comprise an important component of the southpolar benthic ecosystem, our knowledge of them is limited. The metazoan meiofauna and the surrounding sediments were studied fortnightly for 18 mo in a shallow bay at Signy Island (Factory Cove, South Orkneys, Antarctica) to test whether and how the temporal variability of the environment influenced meiobenthos dynamics. By examination of the distribution of the abundance and biomass of the total community, the density of higher taxonomic groups, and of individual dominant nematode genera... |

The spiny dogfish, Squalus acanthias is an euribatic, euritermic and cosmopolitan specie. In the Argentine Sea it consumes diversity of preys, characteristic of a generalist and oportunist feeder, butits principal food items are ctenophores, fishes and cephalopods.Diet overlap between sexes was found between 34°-37°S and 101-150 m,where males principally feed on fishes, squid and polichaetes, sharing only ctenophores and hake consumption with the females. Near 62 cm TL there is a shift in the diet, due to an increment of argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi and squid Illex argentinus predation and a diminution in ctenophores Pleurobrachia pileus eating. Feeding shows an increment from north to south, its mode on 42°-43°S.Argentine hake is an important prey... |

The information gathered in Argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) Northern population assessment cruises allowed to perform studies on the zooplankton community of the Buenos Aires shelf since 1995. In this work the most relevant results as regards the taxonomy and size structure of the community, faunistic areas, and 'key' species in relation to the hydrographic conditions and frontal systems of the region are presented. Besides, the consequences those results might have on Argentine anchovy trophic ecology are analyzed. The taxonomic groups studied included copepods, cladocerans, appendicularians, chaetognaths, amphipods, and euphausiids. The multivariate analysis applied to quantitative data allowed to clearly distinguish three faunistic areas with... |

Zygochlamys patagonica (King and Broderip, 1832) is an ecosystem engineer mollusk which forms aggregations or banks, of different densities, in the main frontal systems of the SW Atlantic Ocean. The objectives of this work were to analyze the composition, biomass, diversity and species richness of the benthic invertebrate assemblages at different scallop densities as well as the variability of their trophic webs at high and low scallop densities. For this, samples of the benthic invertebrate assemblages were taken at the Shelf Break Front with a non-selective epibenthic dredge. It was evaluated if the abundance (ind/m2) or biomass (colonial species, gr/m2) of the different taxa varied with scallop densities. The results showed that from 14 analyzed, the... |
